Taking over the department reins - What to expect as a new manager
When you first find yourself in a management position, you may experience many things, good and bad. It is a different perspective when you cross over the playing field. What you once thought and believed about your company or department may seem a little different in your new role. There are some specific things you can expect. For Native managers and managers that work with Native workforces. There are some particular challenges, as there may be a difference in what is expected of you as a leader and a manager.
What to expect as a new manager:
Usually the first few weeks (months) is pegged for adjustments. You may feel torn and unsure of your new role. Each person will have very different experiences based on their personality, relationship with co-workers, the culture of the organizations and their leadership and management styles.
Your staff will be curious about your management style and may end up testing your skills. You will have to be confident in your decisions and your skills as a competent administrator.
There will be some resistance to any changes you may want make in the workplace. It is important to be careful when imposing change too quickly on your new staff.
You must be prepared in “inherit” some previous problems that you will now become accountable for, even if they occurred before you held the position, you will be expected to address and resolve them.
You will experience some conflict as your staff and other stakeholders adjust to you as a new manager, it may be difficult for some former peer co-workers to accept you as their new supervisor.
As a new supervisor or manager, you are on your way to career advancement. It is important to be positive and optimistic about your role, your future and the future of your business and organization.
